An Assisted Living Residence is often perfect
for the senior who needs some help with bathing, dressing,
taking medications and eating but who doesn't need nursing
care. In Assisted Living these activities of daily living
(ADLs) are provided, along with basic laundry and
housekeeping services. Scheduled transportation to doctors
and for recreational activities is also often provided.
The assisted
living resident usually has a private
or semi-private bed/sitting
room or small apartment. Meals are provided in a
common dining room. Going to the dining area for meals
prevents residents from becoming isolated in their
rooms.
The State of Texas
licenses many assisted living residences. Small
personal care homes with fewer than four residents are
not required to be licensed in Texas.
Medicare does not
cover assisted living because no medical care is
provided by the facility. Medicaid does cover some
assisted living services in contracted homes for
residents who meet income and medical requirements.
Many long-term
care insurance policies cover assisted living in
licensed facilities.
