Renewing a Senior's Driving License in Texas

Most drivers in Texas are required to renew their Driver's License every six years. Alternate renewals may be by mail, internet or telephone. Only once every 12 years is a fully licensed Texas automobile driver required to appear in person at the Department of Public Safety in order to renew a license. At this appearance, the renewing driver must also pass a vision test.

This rule has recently been amended for Texas senior drivers. Drivers between the ages of 79 and 84 must appear in person at the DMV every six years when their license is due to be renewed. At that time they must pass a vision test.

Drivers age 85 and older must appear in person and pass a vision test every two years in order to renew their driver's license.

Texas law does not require that a renewing driver take a written exam or a road test in order to renew a license. However, the law does permit Department of Public Safety officials to require additional written and/or road testing if an applicant appears to be confused, have poor eyesight, or demonstrates other cause for concern.

If there is any doubt that an older driver may not pass the license renewal process it would be a good idea for someone to accompany that older driver to the DMV. It might be necessary for someone else to drive home if the applicant doesn't pass.
