Senior Apartments, Retirement Communities and
Independent Living Residences are all popular with seniors
who can live on their own. These seniors like the idea of
being part of a community of adults who share common
interests and with the possibility of transportation,
recreational activities, and increased security.
Independent
living communities often provide meal plan
options, housekeeping, laundry services, group
activities and scheduled transportation.
Age-Inclusive
communities usually do not have age requirements. They
are likely to be attractive to retirees or those
nearing retirement. These communities often offer
pools, exercise facilities, and tennis courts. They
are often located on or near golf courses.
Age-Exclusive
communities generally do require residents to be age
55 or older.
While Medicare and
Medicaid do not cover the cost of independent living
communities, some senior apartments are subsidized
under Section 8 or other local and State subsidy
programs for those on a limited income. These
apartments often have lengthy waiting lists.
Retirement
apartments and other independent senior living
arrangements do not provide health care services.
Because they do not provide this kind of service,
independent or retirement communities are not
regulated by local, state or federal agencies.
