At
Senior Centers
participants
stay active and connected through educational programs,
social events, sports, recreation and volunteer
opportunities. Basic support services in senior recreational
facilities are designed for older individuals. They do not
have to compete with children or younger families for space
or activities.
Senior centers also often serve as a
resource for the whole community for
information on and about aging,
caregiver support, and for the
development of new services and
programs.
Most senior centers offer regularly
scheduled exercise and activity
programs. Many offer classes in
crafts and the arts. Health and
wellness programs, volunteer
opportunities and educational
opportunities are center points of
many centers. Many offer some
transportation and information and
referral services.
Nutrition programs in many senior
centers bring seniors together for a
daily hot meal. These are often
subsidized or available at no cost
to seniors on a low income.
Senior centers are designed for the
active senior who does not have
cognitive problems that require
supervision. An older person with
health issues or dementia who needs
supervision and personal assistance
will benefit more from an
adult day program.
