Residences designed for senior independent living, also
sometimes called senior apartments, retirement communities or
senior congregate living, are designed for the senior who can
live independently but who want someone else to take care of
maintenance and yard work.
Some senior residential alternatives, such as apartments, offer
simply a safe living environment with neighbors who may share
interests. Many retirement communities offer additional services
such as meal service, transportation, housekeeping, and recreational
opportunities.
Some senior apartments participate in subsidized housing programs
such as the Section 8 voucher or HUD 202 programs. Many of these
residences have active waiting lists. Because retirement residences
are designed for healthy adults, Medicare and Medicaid do not
provide assistance with costs.
While health care services are generally not provided, communities
usually encourage residents to take advantage of locally available
home care services for assistance with personal care and medical
needs.
